Global Talent Visa Nominator - Getting a Nomination from ACS 2022

Global Talent Visa Nominator - Getting a Nomination from ACS 2022

ACS NOMINATION FOR GLOBAL TALENT VISA OVERVIEW

The one stumbling block for a lot of potential Global Talent Visa applicants is getting a nominator. While they may have internationally recognised achievements and are prominent in their fields, they cannot find anybody who can or will nominate them.

The nominator for a Global Talent Visa must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or an Australian organization and MUST have a ‘national reputation’ in the same sector as the applicant.

One of the organizations that have been recognized by the Department of Home Affairs to have a national reputation and that can provide nominations to eligible applicants for the Global Talent Visa is the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

ACS is the skill assessing authority for most IT skilled workers who want to get skill assessments for the Skilled Migration Program (Visa 491, 190 and 189) or Employer-Sponsored Program (TSS 482 Visa, Visa 186…)

ACS is listed in the top 10 nominators of 2021 for Global Talent Visa program since this is one of the first choices for technological talents to sign up for their nominator.

We have previously discussed the process of applying for an ACS nomination back in June 2020. However, the ACS nomination process had changed since then.

The ACS can now assess nominations for the following target sectors:

  1. DigiTech;
  2. Fintech and
  3. AgTech

ACS is the peak industry body for the ICT sector had been recognized by the Department of Home Affairs to have a national reputation.

ACS nomination process (step by step)

The ACS nomination application process involves 3 steps:

Step 1 – Preliminary assessment. Applicants need to provide ACS with supporting evidence showing that they meet the ACS and the Department of Home Affairs criteria.

In addition to the applicant’s identity documents, evidence to provide to ACS include documents showing that the applicant meets the criteria for the grant of the global talent visa, namely:

  • That they are Internationally recognised and their exceptional and outstanding achievements in their field
  • That they are prominent in their field
  • That they will be an asset to the Australian community
  • That they will have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field
  • That their contribution will be of benefit to Australia as a whole.

ACS now requires applicants to pay a non-refundable fee of $300 for a Global Talent Visa suitability assessment.

Step 2 -  ACS will request for additional information as necessary. You may need to attend an interview with ACS.

Step 3 – ACS will advise you whether ACS can proceed with a GTI nomination. If ACS deems the applicant as “suitable” they will require a payment of $500 and provide the applicant with a Nomination letter for Distinguished Talent (Form 1000).

Important tips of ACS Nomination for Global talent visa applicants

The ACS will only nominate applicants who they deem to be strong candidates.

As we have written in our previous post about the ACS nomination, the ACS nomination will be an advocacy-driven process, in a similar way to the GTI visa program. Therefore, it is important that any submissions for a nomination from ACS will demonstrate the applicant's skills and expertise in their relevant field.

Those thinking of applying for a nomination from the ACS must show that they meet ACS’ criteria or general program standard of distinguished talent or global talent. They need to show ACS that their achievements are exceptional and cutting edge, that they have been involved in significant projects that have wide-reaching impacts and they have made significant contributions or innovations of international significance in the field of ICT that could make them stand out from the others.

An example of international recognition: If you are working as head of the software engineering team of Amazon Web Services, this project has been widely used and is one of the best projects of Amazon that helps ample of organizations. You are now counted as having an international recognition and will be an asset to Australia.

As the ACS will only nominate who they think is the best and brightest in the field, it is important to provide a strong application.

Lastly, because of the number of submissions they receive, it can take a few weeks to get a decision from the ACS. The ACS processing time can be anywhere from 6-8 weeks. In some instances, it can take up to 24 weeks to process. So, if you are in Australia and your visa expiry is coming up, you may have to look for another nominator.
