NSW migration program 2023-24 will focus on priority sectors rather than skilled occupation lists

New South Wales (NSW) intends to commence invitation rounds for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) next week. NSW will no longer rely on specific ANZSCO unit groups to compile a skills list. Instead, it's adopting a dynamic sector-focused strategy to meet the demands of the job market.

NSW Target Sectors

The priority sectors identified by NSW closely mirror the current skills shortages within the state. These key areas include:
• Health
• Education
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
• Infrastructure
• Agriculture

While the program's primary focus this year revolves around these sectors, it's worth noting that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from non-priority sectors with high rankings will still be considered. However, given the unprecedented demand and limited available spots, prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to explore all alternative migration options available to them.

Skilled Invitation Rounds

Invitation rounds are an important part of the NSW nomination process. Here is what you need to know:

Timing: Invitation rounds will continue throughout the fiscal year. These rounds, however, do not adhere to a predefined schedule, so there are no publicly announced dates.

Selection Criteria: NSW evaluates EOIs based on multiple factors, including your points score, English language proficiency, and skilled work experience. Priority will be given to EOIs aligned with the NSW Priority Sectors mentioned above.

Invitation: It's important to note that invitations for NSW nomination remain at the sole discretion of the NSW Government.

Submission Date: The date you submit or amend your Skill Select EOI has no impact on your likelihood of being invited.

Supporting Regional Development

Regional development remains a key focus for NSW. The regional skilled migration program is strategically designed to assist regional businesses in attracting qualified talent. Updates regarding the reopening of this program will be shared once all applications from the previous fiscal year have been processed.
